Tactile Icon Map
HALOS® Text Description of Tactile Icons
This document describes the tactile icons created for your appliance. This appliance has three dials – temperature, function and timer. The temperature and timer dial settings are numbers, such as 350 degrees on the temperature dials. Representing the exact number would result in labels that are too large and/or too detailed. For these dials we simply suggest a few single digit tactile icon numbers. These numbers can be mapped to the most used settings on the dial.
Top dial – Temperature.
Starting at the 9 o’clock position and moving clockwise.
Minimum – the shape is the number one. A vertical line with a little nub at the upper left.
Second temperature setting – the shape is the number two. Flat on the bottom, rounded on the upper right.
Third temperature setting – the shape is the number three. Two bumps on the right side and rough on the left side.
Fourth temperature setting – the shape is the number four. A vertical line with a triangular shape on the left side.
Broil/Toast – the shape is a horizontal line that is smooth on the top and rough on the bottom.
Middle dial – Function.
Starting at the 9 o’clock position and moving clockwise.
Broil – the shape is a horizontal line that is smooth on the top and rough on the bottom.
Toast – the shape is a rounded square with a cutout (like a bite) in the lower right corner.
Bake – the shape is a horizontal line that is rough on the top and the bottom.
Lower dial – Timer.
Starting at the 11 o’clock position and moving clockwise.
Stay On – the shape is a circle with a nub on the top.
Off – the shape is an X – diagonal lines crossing in the middle of each line.
First timer setting - the shape is the number one. A vertical line with a little nub at the upper left.
Second timer setting - the shape is the number two. Flat on the bottom, rounded on the upper right.
Third timer setting - the shape is the number three. Two bumps on the right side and rough on the left side.
End of description.
Designer Comments
Not a fan of labeling toaster ovens - minimal space for labels.
First usage of tactile icon numbers!
Also first attempt at providing tactile icon numbers for temperature and time. The most common cooking temperature, 350 degrees Fahrenheit, requires three digits if using exact representation. The idea is to label the most significant settings with sequential, single digits. Identification of the most significant settings is a personal choice - a customization.
